Major upgrade on the way at Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport will offer a number of new facilities to travellers visiting Australia over the coming years as it carries out a major development project.

The upgrade, which will be undertaken gradually over the next five years to minimise disruption to passengers, will be the biggest since the airport was first built in the late 1960s.

A total of 25,000 square metres of new space will be added to the hub's international terminal at a cost of more than AU$330 million (£162 million).

One individual project, scheduled for completion in 2010, will create a new passenger security and customs processing zone for outbound international travellers, with facilities including a new public concourse.

By 2011, a new international passenger precinct will have been built at Melbourne Airport featuring ten-metre-high windows that will provide views across the airfield.

Flights to Melbourne are available with British Airways, Qantas, Etihad Airways and other carriers.
