AITO: Brits will still travel abroad this year
The economic downturn will not stop British people from travelling abroad this year, according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).
While the association expects the UK tourism industry to perform well, it also predicted that the fall in demand for foreign holidays will not be as steep as has been forecast.
Ian Bradley, a spokesman for the AITO, said: "People are going to stay home a little bit more this year, that's why the overseas figures are down, I don't think it is down as dramatically as people make it out to be.
"It's going to be a strong summer for the British domestic tourism market, but I still think it's going to be OK for overseas as well."
The 2009 summer holiday season began for many Brits last month during the May bank holiday weekend.
Some 1.8 million people headed overseas during the period, according to Abta - The Travel Association, travelling to popular destinations such as Spain, Turkey and Egypt.
