A major exhibition previously based at
Washington DC's Smithsonian Institution in the
United States will be on show in
Lisbon,
Portugal this summer.
Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries features more than 250 artefacts borrowed from private collections around the world.
It will be on show at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in
Lisbon from July 9th to October 11th.
The exhibition explores the period of the 16th century when sailors began crossing international waters to create trading networks between regions as far flung as
South America,
Africa,
Asia and
Europe.
Artefacts that feature in the display include 16th century world maps created by cartographers in Portugal and
Italy, African hunting horns and rare terracotta statues and religious icons from
Brazil.
Holidaymakers can see the exhibition by catching flights to Lisbon with airlines such as
TAP Air Portugal,
easyJet and
British Airways.
