New gallery to be unveiled in Vilnius
City breaks in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, could prove popular with art lovers this year following the opening of a new gallery in the city.
The National Gallery of Art will be officially inaugurated by Valdas Adamkus, president of the Republic of Lithuania, tomorrow (June 20th) before opening to the public the following day.
It will house and exhibit some 46,000 items from the national collection of Lithuanian art from the 20th and 21st centuries, stretching from the year 1900 right up to the present day.
Two major exhibitions have been put together for the opening of the new gallery, one of which features work by artists including Wassily Kandinsky, Frantisek Kupka and Arnold Scoenberg.
Lolita Jablonskiene, chief curator of the new gallery, said: "The opening of the National Gallery of Art as the first Lithuanian institution fully-equipped with proper and specific museum facilities and conditions delivers an exponential boon for the Lithuanian people as for the first time artworks associated with the modern masters, such as Kupka, Scoenberg and Munch, can be shown here in Vilnius."
Art lovers can visit the new gallery by catching flights to Vilnius with carriers such as Czech Airlines, Lufthansa and SAS.
