Brits 'saving money by holidaying at home'
Flights to Edinburgh, Belfast and other destinations in the UK could prove popular with the 19.8 million Britons who will reportedly be taking holidays at home this year.
Nearly two thirds (63 per cent) of British people planning a summer break intend to stay in the UK, according to research by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance.
A fifth (19 per cent) of travellers planning a domestic break cited the credit crunch as their main reason for not choosing a foreign holiday.
The research also found that 14 per cent of Britons will be taking less spending money away with them this year, while ten per cent will be making savings by booking cheaper accommodation.
Sam Marrs, Sainsbury's Travel Insurance manager, said: "With a significant number of us still intending to get away this summer, holidaymakers are taking a range of measures to reduce their holiday spend, holidaying in the UK instead of abroad being the main one."
The East Midlands, Yorkshire and the south-west have the highest percentage of holidaymakers planning to stay in the UK this summer, according to the research, suggesting that regional hubs such as East Midlands Airport, Leeds-Bradford Airport and Exeter Airport could see an increase in domestic traffic.
