Recession 'not discouraging British travellers'
British people will continue taking holidays despite the effects of the recession and the credit crunch, according to new research.
The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) teamed up with Wanderlust magazine to conduct a survey that gathered the views of over 2,000 consumers and 50 holiday companies.
More than three quarters (77 per cent) of the people questioned said they are planning to travel at least as much as they did last year and 72 per cent are expecting to spend as much money.
Over 70 per cent have plans for a holiday in Europe despite the low value of the pound against the euro, while half (50 per cent) of the survey respondents said they will be travelling in the UK.
"Overall, the message is very encouraging and highlights the importance for everyone in the travel industry to ensure they continue promoting their services to consumers who are still looking to travel as much as ever in 2009," an AITO spokesperson told TravelMole.
Sainsbury's Finance released a survey in July which indicated that British people will take a total of 56 million holidays this summer.
