New Heathrow Airport terminal plans revealed
BAA has announced plans to invest £1 billion in the redevelopment of Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport, providing a new home for Star Alliance carriers such as Singapore Airlines, bmi and Lufthansa.
The passenger facility will be equipped with self-service check-in machines and bag-drop desks, 15 security search lanes, 11,300 square metres of floor space and other amenities for the 20 million travellers that are expected to use it every year.
Nine new aircraft stands will be installed at the terminal, providing it with the capability to handle next-generation aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
BAA is also investing in energy-saving measures such as rooftop solar panels and north-facing windows to provide the building with natural light, which will achieve a 40 per cent reduction in overall carbon emissions.
"These exciting plans will be a reality for millions of Heathrow's passengers, making every passenger journey a better one and underlining Heathrow's pre-eminent position at the heart of international travel and the global economy," said Mike Brown, chief operating officer at London Heathrow.
"Passengers travelling through Heathrow will be using new and extensively refurbished facilities which provide us with an excellent platform from which we can provide a better service to our customers than ever before."
The redevelopment of Terminal 2 is part of a wider £4.8 billion investment programme at London Heathrow to provide new facilities and better services at the UK's busiest airport.
