Montreal airport opens news departures area
A new state-of-the-art multi-million dollar departures area has finally been unveiled at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport in Canada.
In a bid to make travel easier and more comfortable for the 1.5 million passengers who leave the city and jet off to the US each year, the new building serves to boost check-in capacity by around 50 per cent.
In addition, the $300 million departures area is home to its own security and customs facilities, with check-in facilities having been moved closer to boarding gates to shorten the walk for departing passengers.
Announcing the official opening of the new facility, James Cherry, president and chief executive of Aeroports de Montral, noted: "Passengers will be able to move through check-in and to their planes more efficiently, securely and rapidly."
While the economic climate has led to a seven per cent drop in traffic in and out of Montreal Airport over the past year, it is expected that 30,000 flights will leave for the US over the course of 2009.
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport is currently Canada's third-busiest airport, handling close to 13 million passengers in 2008.
