Vermeer blockbuster show set for New York museum

One of the world's most famous paintings is due to go on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York next month.

With interest in Vermeer currently at a peak, it is anticipated that the upcoming exhibition showcasing the Dutch Master's life and work will prove to be a blockbuster hit for the museum.

Demand for tickets looks set to grow even more now that it has been confirmed that his masterpiece The Milkmaid will be loaned to the New York museum by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for the exhibition.

One of only 36 known works by Vermeer, the 17th century oil on canvas painting was last seen in the US on the occasion of the 1939 World's Fair, also held in New York.

The exhibition, which will also feature works by several other Dutch painters, will run from September 10th until November 29th.

Located along the eastern side of Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art houses acclaimed works ranging from art from classical antiquity to American modernism.
