Travellers 'should head east for affordable breaks'
Travellers looking for affordable breaks have been informed that destinations in eastern Europe offer the best bargains.
According to research by Tesco Travel Money, countries such as Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria offer holiday options for families that are cheaper than staying in the UK.
Despite the affordability of these non-euro destinations, only seven per cent of Brits intend to visit them this year, according to the poll.
More than a third (34 per cent) of the people surveyed said they are intending to spend less on their holidays in 2009.
A Tesco Travel Money spokesperson said: "Over the past three years, over a third of Brits have taken last minute holidays and with their budgets stretched even further this year, this trend is set to continue.
"But those looking for a bargain break would be wise not just to look into the cost of travel but also the expenses they are likely to incur once they are there."
The company surveyed the cost of specific holiday items for a family of four, finding that Dubrovnik is the most affordable destination for drinks at a cafe and Sofia is cheapest for a zoo or theme park trip.
