Birmingham Airport receives Carbon Trust Standard
Birmingham Airport has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, which is reportedly the world's first accolade that requires an organisation to make real reductions in its carbon footprint year-on-year.
The airport received the standard for cutting its carbon-based emissions by four per cent over a three-year period from April 2006.
New technologies have been introduced at Birmingham Airport to reduce its impact on the environment, while operational procedures have been changed and initiatives have been launched to improve staff awareness.
The West Midlands gateway has achieved a reduction in its carbon output despite the fact that it has expanded and handled higher passenger numbers over the past three years.
Paul Kehoe, chief executive of the airport, said: "We know that businesses are responsible for around half of the UK's carbon consumption, and although we're by no means the largest consumer, our monthly electricity usage is equivalent to that of the annual consumption of over 700 homes.
"We're therefore delighted to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard, which is a great way of showing that we are moving in the right direction."
Travellers can catch flights to Dubai, New York, Rome and other popular destinations from Birmingham Airport.
