Brits 'still show preference for Greek islands'

Greece's island hotspots are still highly popular among British travellers, according to a spokeswoman for the country's tourism industry.

Sofia Panayiotaki, director of the UK and Ireland office of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO), said that Brits commonly show a preference for Crete, Corfu and Rhodes.

She also pointed out that the release of the film Mamma Mia led to an increase in demand for visits to the island where it was filmed, Skopelos, which can be reached by taking flights to Skiathos and catching a ferry.

Commenting on the general appeal of Greece, Ms Panayiotaki said: "You can find exactly what you want - beautiful landscape, beautiful hotels, beautiful scenery, very hospitable people and at the same time, very good prices.

"You can choose from a range of five-star hotels to self-catering accommodation and we can cater for the needs of different people."

Between 60 and 70 million holidaymakers visit mainland Greece or one of its islands every year, according to the GNTO.
