Southern hemisphere 'to be popular with long-haul travellers'
Long-haul travellers planning holidays over the coming months will show a strong interest in southern hemisphere countries such as New Zealand and South Africa, according to a spokesman for Abta - The Travel Association.
Sean Tipton pointed out that the southern hemisphere moves into the summer season as winter sets in across Europe and the UK, meaning that journeys south of the equator are often a popular option among sun seekers.
"This is the time of year that New Zealand and South Africa have their summer so this is when the southern hemisphere becomes very popular for long-haul holidaymakers," he said.
"Our December is their June."
Mr Tipton also commented on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, saying that visitor numbers are set to "go through the roof" during the event.
Speaking about holiday destinations that are closer to home for British travellers, the Abta spokesman predicted that the Canary Islands and Egypt will be popular as winter sun hotspots, while Austria will attract travellers looking for a traditional Christmas break.
