Singapore Airlines took top prize in both the
long-haul and
business carrier categories of the 2009 Guardian and Observer Travel Awards.
The operator beat
Air New Zealand and
Jet Airways to the top spot in the long-haul section, while
Emirates and
Virgin Atlantic were in second and third places respectively for the business accolade.
Guardian and Observer readers voted
Swiss their favourite short-haul airline ahead of
Lufthansa and
KLM.
New Zealand took top place for the second consecutive year in the category covering Britons' favourite long-haul countries, while
Switzerland was named the top European nation ahead of
Norway and
Austria.
Sydney won the award for the most popular overseas city, while
Cape Town jumped five places to second and
New York came in third.
Travellers showed their interest in adventurous excursions by voting Iguazu Falls on the border between
Argentina and
Brazil their favourite overseas attraction, with the Angkor temple complex in
Cambodia and Machu Picchu in
Peru the runners up in this section.
London dominated the voting for the top attractions in the
UK, with the British Museum, London Eye and Tate Modern taking the top three places.
