Flying through Dubai can make a journey cheaper
Holidaymakers are becoming increasingly attracted by indirect flights through cities such as Dubai because of price incentives, a travel industry body has claimed.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines will offer cheaper rates for the inconvenience of travellers having to change planes.
The new trend is not due to people booking their holidays in different ways, the organisation explained.
A spokesman for the IATA said that direct services are often more appealing to customers.
"However, in some cases leisure travellers or those with less hectic schedules may be more price sensitive and would respond to price incentives to take indirect routes. That, for example, is one of the biggest marketing strategies for places like Dubai," he commented.
Travellers flying from secondary cities in the UK will not usually be able to access a direct flight to certain long-haul destinations such as Australia, the organisation added.
Research from aviation business OAG revealed that airline capacity in the Middle East, Latin America and Africa is currently higher now than it was in October last year.
