Reform of APD supported by public
An overhaul of the Air Passenger Duty (APD) is supported by the majority of people in the UK, a new study has shown.
Research from easyJet revealed that 80 per cent of people quizzed think APD should be changed to apply to planes carrying cargo and private jets.
Under the current regulations, these types of aircraft are exempt from APD as well as foreign passengers changing flights and people flying long-haul.
Andy Harrison, easyJet chief executive, said: "APD is a daft tax that the government promised to reform. It broke its promise and increased the tax burden on the average family instead."
He added: "We need to make air tax greener and fairer now. It should be reformed from a poll tax into a flight tax that taxes emissions, not families."
APD for short haul passengers is to increase from £10 to £11 on November 1st while it will rise again by another £1 on the same day on 2010.
