Why is New Zealand popular for holidays?

The New Zealand Ministry of Tourism announced this week it has seen spending by international visitors increase by 1.2 per cent - but what makes it a good destination for a holiday?

Despite being almost 12,000 miles away from the UK, it has enough to entice anyone looking for a truly unique break.

According to a recent article by Kathy Matheson of the Canadian Press, adventurous activities are as readily available as rich cultural history on both the North and South Island.

She visited the Rotorua district and saw the traditional Maori dance - the Hakka - performed on stage at a heritage centre.

After this, a gorgeous Maori feast was enjoyed, before Ms Matheson took a tram to the Pohutu geyser, which is a geothermal reserve constantly bubbling up and shooting water water into the air.

Of course, the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand, so checking out some of the famous locations could be a great idea for Tolkien-ites.
