Manchester Airport wins British Travel Award
Manchester Airport was among the winners at the 2009 ceremony of the British Travel Awards last week, receiving the accolade for the UK's leading air travel hub for the second consecutive year.
The north-west gateway overcame competition from Heathrow Airport, Leeds-Bradford Airport, Glasgow Airport and other hubs in the category, which focused on criteria including sustainability, customer satisfaction and technology.
Lorraine Barnes Burton, chief executive of the British Travel Awards, said Manchester Airport was a "clear winner".
Andrew Harrison, the base's commercial director, said: "To have received this highly prestigious title for the second year running is a huge accomplishment for Manchester Airport and highlights the hard work, dedication and successes achieved over the past 12 months."
EasyJet was voted the best no-frills carrier and economy class provider, while British Airways picked up the award for the best scheduled airline in Europe and Virgin Atlantic was named the leading long-haul operator.
The accolade for the best city break destination went to Barcelona and the US was found to be British travellers' favourite country to visit.
