Over-60s 'travelling away from recession'
The passion for travel among people over the age of 60 is not being dimmed by the recession, according to research by World Travel Market (WTM).
In the lead-up to this year's WTM in London, which began yesterday (November 9th), a survey was conducted on the impact that the recession is having on consumers' travel plans.
More than half (54 per cent) of respondents said that their holidays are "sacrosanct" and would not be affected by the economic downturn, with two-thirds of this group over the age of 60.
The research also found that many older travellers are already planning their holidays for 2010, despite having taken a break this year.
WTM chairman Fiona Jeffery said: "Eighty per cent of the public sampled admit issues such as poor currency exchange rates and flight taxes won't deter them. And of those people, the over-60s is the biggest grouping (84 per cent).
"They are fitter and more adventurous and are not prepared to let a recession spoil their fun."
The 2009 WTM will be held at the ExCeL in London until November 12th and is expected to host nearly 50,000 travel industry professionals.
