Qantas planning 'airports of the future'
Qantas has unveiled its Airport of the Future initiative, which will see its bases across Australia offering improved check-in procedures over the coming years.
Non-frequent flyers are expected to benefit from the changes, which will include quicker bag-drop services and an increase in the number of hosted kiosks.
Members of Qantas' Frequent Flyer scheme will also see major developments when electronic chips are added to their cards, turning them into a personal boarding pass linked to a permanent bag tag.
Passengers will be able to swipe their card on a reader and proceed straight to a bag-drop point or through security to their departure gate or lounge.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the initiative will eliminate queues for customers when it is launched in Perth next year before extending to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra.
Mr Joyce added: "Next-generation check-in is all about responding to our customers' desire for increased speed and ease through the airport process.
"The response from customers in our market research, to the major innovation, has been overwhelmingly positive."
