Travellers 'seeking more authentic holiday experiences'

People increasingly want to take a holiday that is more authentic and respects the nature of the country, an expert has claimed.

Justin Francis, co-founder of tour operator ResponsibleTravel.com, said that Brits are looking for a more "authentic and real travel experience" which allows them to get closer to communities.

"Our awareness of the destruction of marine environments, rainforests and endangered species has led us to respect the environment and want to conserve and experience it for ourselves," he added.

Many people may now take holidays based on volunteering in the communities, Mr Francis said, adding that safaris and whale watching are popular with many holidaymakers.

Speaking on the destinations these conscious travellers are likely to go to, he added that Madagascar, the Amazon, Tanzania and Kenya are likely to be popular.

A panel of experts for the World Travel Market recently gave the Whale Watch Kaikoura from New Zealand an award for creating a tourism initiative from the ground up.
