Heathrow Terminal 2 closes after 54 years
Travellers catching flights from Heathrow Airport will no longer depart through Terminal 2, after the building was shut to make way for improvements.
The area was closed on Monday (November 23rd) ahed of work which is due to start on it in 2010.
Around £1 billion will be spent on the terminal to modernise it, provide a better customer experience and lower its impact on the environment.
Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, said: "The closure of Terminal 2 marks an important moment in the modernisation of Heathrow."
Terminal 2 has served 316 million passengers in the 54 years it has been open.
The new hub will be the base for Star Alliance members, with product and service vice president Lee Hock Lye saying that it will mean all the carriers can operate under one roof.
A number of airlines have now moved to Terminal 4, including Air France and Czech Airlines.
