New Year celebrations in Finland to light up the country
Finland will celebrate New Year's Eve in style by hosting an enormous fireworks display to warm up the thousands of attendees and mark the beginning of 2010.
In an event taking place outside the city's cathedral, the mayor of Helsinki will speak to the masses to wish all a prosperous 2010, before hundreds of rockets are fired into the sky in one of the most spectacular displays in Scandinavia.
As Lapland is the traditional home of Santa Claus, the country generally gets into the festive spirit in style and this year will be no different.
Shopkeepers in Helsinki will be creating a number of special crafts drawing on unique local customs, included melted tin shapes, which are traditionally used to forecast the future once the spectacular fireworks display has ended.
Those in search of a quieter atmosphere will also be catered for, as the dozens of restaurants and cafes situated close to the cathedral allow couple or families to enjoy a relaxing meal and some drinks while watching the firework display out of the windows.
