New Zealand film competition gets underway

Many filmmakers who book flights to New Zealand do so to be inspired by the country's dramatic scenery.

This has been recognised with the launch of new competition 100% Pure New Zealand Presents Your Big Break, which gives aspiring directors the chance to show off their work to Peter Jackson, the man behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Competition finalists will head to New Zealand to shoot and direct their own short films, with Lord of the Rings executive producer Barrie Osbourne on hand to assist the entrants.

Peter Jackson will judge the completed entries before the winner is shown on US television.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton said the support of the film heavyweights will ensure that the film world takes notice of the competition.

"Your Big Break is asking people to capture the essence of 100% Pure New Zealand and tell the world their story of how they see the youngest country on earth," he commented.

Peter Jackson said during the making of Lord of the Rings that "New Zealand is the best country in the world to shoot this film, because of the variety of locations we have".
