Visitors to Italy advised to head to Bergamo
Holidaymakers taking flights to Milan have been advised to spend at least a few days in the authentically Italian city of Bergamo.
According to the latest statistics from the region's tourism authorities, Britons currently account for 12 per cent of all foreign visitors to the town, with many attracted by its history, culture and food.
However, Turismo Bergamo has suggested that many of those travellers taking flights to Milan and other cities in the north of Italy are failing to get out and explore the true gems of the region.
The organisation's communications manager Alessandra Pitocchi advised: "Taste our cuisine and the typical food and wine of our area and a visit to Bergamo and its historical centre is not to be missed.
"I also suggest [discovering] the Iseo lake, a hidden gem still unknown to mass tourism."
As well as being within easy distance of Milan, Bergamo is also located on the edge of the Italian Alps.
