Auckland considering introduction of tourist trams
World travellers booking flights to New Zealand could soon be benefiting from a new tram system linking the major tourist attractions of the nation's capital.
With the tourist circular tram long-established as a highlight of a city break to Melbourne, the Auckland Regional Council is reportedly looking into introducing a similar system in the heart of the city.
Rather than serving business commuters or shoppers, the planned tram line would instead serve to speed tourists between top attractions, including its popular waterfront, the New Zealand Herald has revealed.
According to the report, $3 million has already been earmarked for the purchase of six 'heritage trams' to serve Auckland tourists, with these likely to be similar to those running through the streets of nearby Christchurch and Melbourne, as well as numerous other top world cities such as Hong Kong and Amsterdam.
One of the key stopping-off points for travellers taking flights to New Zealand, Christchurch is seen as a gateway to the natural wonders of the South Island, including the Franz Josef Glacier and the Remarkables National Park.
