Increased number of flights to Ecuador would boost country's tourism
More direct flights to Ecuador are needed from Britain if the South American country's tourism market is to grow.
This is according to the Ecuador Tourist Board, whose spokesman confirmed that 20 per cent of its budget had gone towards the UK market.
"This might mean developing direct air connections from the UK to increase the air frequencies to enable travellers to get there more easily and also help develop links with the key players in the travel industry," the spokesman explained.
He went on to say that the majority of holidaymakers heading to Ecuador are interested in cultural tourism, ecotourism or trips with a sports or adventure element, all of which add to the country's status as "the world's most famous expedition destination".
Approximately one million visitors travel on flights to Ecuador each year, although the country's tourist board wants this to increase to one-and-a-half million by 2014.
Located on the equator, Ecuador is the smallest of the Andean countries and is famed for its cultural, historical and natural offerings.
