Hamilton Island off the coast of Queensland,
Australia, has revealed that it saw record visitor numbers in November 2009, posting its highest number of arrivals in six years.
There was a 19 per cent year-on-year increase in people from the
UK and
Ireland visiting the destination last month.
From July to November this year, there was a three per cent rise in the number of room nights sold on Hamilton Island and a 70 per cent increase in bookings at qualia, the destination's luxury resort.
A number of factors have contributed to the success of the island this year, including the Best Job in the World campaign, which set out to recruit a caretaker to live and work on the islands of the Great Barrier Reef.
Glenn Bourke, chief executive of Hamilton Island, said: "We're absolutely delighted with these record guest numbers which clearly demonstrate that Hamilton Island has a lot to offer.
"The Best Job in the World campaign has without doubt made a real impact on tourism to the Great Barrier Reef and with a raft of new developments on Hamilton Island we've been well placed to take advantage of this."
International travellers can reach the island by taking flights to
Brisbane or
Cairns and making their way along the coast of Queensland towards the Great Barrier Reef.
