Gulf Air targets major CO2 reductions
Gulf Air has set itself a target of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 33,000 tonnes per year.
The airline is introducing a number of initiatives to reduce carbon output related to its aircraft fleet, including the launch of more direct routes to some of its international destinations.
Bahrain's national carrier is also reducing the amount of contingency fuel carried on its flights and has combined its two inflight magazines to avoid wasting paper.
Samer Majali, the company's chief executive officer, said: "As a pioneering airline in the region, Gulf Air believes it can play a positive role in protecting the environment and help build a better future for our children, the local community and the world."
He added: "As a responsible corporate citizen we are fully committed to this global cause and these are some of our proactive measures towards this commitment."
Gulf Air has also been working with the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group, which includes members such as Air New Zealand, Boeing and the World Wildlife Fund.
