Abta: X-factor holidays to be big next year
Abta - The Travel Association has predicting that holidays with a unique appeal, which it describes as 'x-factor' breaks, will be big in 2010.
The group offers the example of a "once-in-a-lifetime" trip to South Africa when the country hosts Africa's first ever football World Cup.
Jamie Oliver's American Road Trip series could foster more interest in lesser-known US states, while Istanbul will have a special appeal next year when it becomes a European Capital of Culture.
Abta also identified a growing appetite for travel to destinations that are emerging from troubled periods, such as Sri Lanka.
Other long-haul hotspots expected to do well in 2010 include Mexico and Thailand.
Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for the travel association, said: "This year has been remarkably resilient for the travel industry and prospects are looking good for 2010, with the trend to more adventurous destinations continuing.
"However, regardless of the destination, a holiday could be remembered for the wrong reasons if travellers fail to check Foreign Office advice before heading off on their adventures."
