Aviation industry 'to improve in 2010'
The coming year will herald an improvement in the fortunes of the aviation industry, according to an expert.
Simon McNamara, director of industry affairs at the European Regions Airline Association (ERA), said that many carriers have faced a "very serious" situation over the past 12 to 18 months as a result of the global economic crisis.
While the outlook for the next year is expected to remain cautious, Mr McNamara said conditions could be eased by rising demand from consumers and increasing revenue for airlines.
The ERA spokesman also identified a potential benefit for travellers as companies seek to boost their profit margins through special offers and promotions.
"Airlines will be discounting tickets in order to attract the numbers in terms of demand once again," Mr McNamara said.
"They will be hoping to inspire customer confidence over the coming year - so there could still be some good deals to be had."
Aer Lingus recently announced that it would be starting the year with its biggest ever January sale, which covers all of the airline's destinations served from Gatwick Airport.
