US Travel Association calls for tighter security
The US Travel Association has called for tighter security measures to be introduced in the country.
Following an attempted terrorist attack on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day, it was announced that tougher checks are being introduced for people travelling from countries that are thought to have terrorist links.
Roger Dow, president of the US Travel Association, described the new policies as "appropriate steps" but stressed that more needs to be done.
He said: "Anything less than the world's most secure and efficient travel process is unacceptable for our country and our nearly 60 million annual international visitors, more than 30 million of whom travel by air.
"International travellers spent more than $110 billion in 2008 and were responsible for nearly one million American jobs."
British prime minister Gordon Brown responded to the attempted attack by announcing that full-body scanners are to be introduced at airports in the UK.
BAA is set to install the first machines at Heathrow Airport in the near future.
