Nelson 'the sunshine capital of New Zealand'
The city of Nelson enjoyed more sun than any other destination in New Zealand last year, according to official figures.
A study by the country's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research found that Nelson saw a total of 2,571 hours of sunshine in the last 12 months.
The city, which is located in the north of New Zealand's South Island, enjoyed 30 hours more good weather that its closest competitor - Tauranga on the North Island.
Blenheim in the Marlborough region, which took top spot in the sunshine rankings in 2008, was rated third last year.
Commenting on the latest result, Nelson mayor Kerry Marshall said: "We've re-entered our rightful place as the sunniest place in New Zealand. There's never been any doubt, but occasionally we share it around the odd other centre around the country.
"People always talk about 'sunny Nelson'. We're the solar city, and this just endorses the fact that it's the best place."
Visitors to Nelson can try local food and wine or explore the surrounding coastline, forests and valleys.
