Caribbean tourist board to focus on sustainability

There could be an increasing number of sustainable tourism opportunities in the Caribbean in the near future as a result of an event set to take place in Barbados this year.

Representatives from various groups will visit the island between May 9th and 12th for the 11th annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism.

During the four-day event, delegates will discuss how to protect the region from the effects of climate change and natural disasters, cultural heritage, financing and other topics.

Gail Henry, a spokeswoman for the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, said: "It is imperative that even as we try to address the challenges that confront the Caribbean tourism sector, we also need to seek out opportunities that will enhance the region's position in this globally competitive industry.

"This requires a concerted effort in developing a world-class tourism product that is not only sustainable, but which is clearly distinguishable from that of other regions."

Post Office Travel Money released a report this week identifying Jamaica as one of the most affordable holiday destinations for Brits this year.
