Long-haul travel 'becoming more popular for over-65s'
People over the age of 65 are showing an increasing interest in long-haul travel, according to statistics released by Age Concern Enterprises.
The company revealed that 2009 saw record take-up of annual multi-trip travel insurance policies for worldwide excursions as well as holidays in Europe.
Between January and September last year, Age Concern's sales of annual worldwide travel insurance to over-65s increased by 41 per cent from the corresponding period in 2008.
It was also revealed that orders for winter sports cover increased by 20 per cent, suggesting that older people are showing an increasing interest in skiing holidays and other adventurous pursuits.
Joe Young of Age Concern Insurance Services said: "Globe-trotting is no longer the [preserve] of the young.
"Over-65s are as likely to be travelling the world as younger generations as they search for ways to bring excitement to retirement. And as the population ages, we predict a travel boom which will see even more mature people exploring far-flung destinations."
The research also suggested that people in this age group are becoming more internet-savvy, with online sales of the company's insurance policies rising by 35 per cent last year.
