Travelling to
South Africa for the 2010 World Cup will be seen as a "trip of a lifetime" for many British people, according to Lonely Planet.
Tom Hall, the company's travel editor, made the comment after Virgin Money released a report indicating that England fans could spend an average of £6,399 each if the team make it to the final on July 10th.
Supporters could fork out a combined total of £319 million on their trips to
South Africa if England reach the last stage of the tournament, according to the research.
Mr Hall said: "There is no lack of enthusiasm of people wanting to go to the World Cup. Yet there is a difference between people wanting to pop across to Europe and being comfortable going as far as South Africa.
"With the costs we have been seeing, many fans would have to make it a 'trip of a lifetime' journey."
On a positive note, the Lonely Planet spokesman revealed that, once travellers arrive in South Africa, the country is "relatively good value".
People planning to travel to the World Cup have the option of taking flights to
Cape Town,
Johannesburg,
Durban and other cities.
