'Record' UK to Iceland visitors
Iceland received a record number of visitors from Britain last month, new figures have suggested.
The data, from the Icelandic Tourist Board, revealed that there was an 11.6 per cent increase in visitor numbers in January 2010 compared with the same period last year.
In total, over 61,000 people from the UK travelled to the northern destination in 2009 and the country expects even more visitors in the coming 12 months.
Sigga Groa Porarinsdottir, marketing manager for the UK and Ireland at the Icelandic Tourist Board, said: " Iceland still has an advantageous exchange rate compared with the euro, which means there has never been a better time for people to visit Iceland with UK travellers' spending money going a lot further."
The representative added that 2009 was "challenging" for Iceland but explained that the new figures are "very encouraging and there is further cause for optimism as visitors will soon have a greater range of travel options, not only from the UK but also within Iceland".
