Travellers spend more in New Zealand in 2009

International travellers spent more money in New Zealand in 2009 than the previous year, according to new figures.

The country's tourism ministry revealed that international visitor spending climbed by four per cent to reach NZ$6.2 billion (£2.8 billion) last year.

Australia was described as the "star performer", with tourists from this country spending NZ$1.8 billion in New Zealand, 11.6 per cent more than in 2008.

Ray Salter, general manager of the tourism ministry, said: "The level of spending for 2009 was an excellent result considering the raft of challenges faced during the year, from the global financial crisis through to the influenza pandemic mid-year.

"Once again the tourism industry has adapted to the conditions and has done a great job in keeping tourism activity and spending at such high levels."

Mr Salter also revealed that signs for the coming year suggested "continued overall improvement" for the sector.

Travellers planning to visit New Zealand in 2010 can catch flights to Auckland, Wellington and other cities with carriers including Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific and Emirates.
