Qantas tourism award winners announced
The winners of the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards were announced at an event in Hobart, Tasmania on February 26th.
A total of 27 categories were covered by the awards, including a section for major tourist attractions that saw Melbourne Aquarium receive the top accolade.
Sydney Central Youth Hostel Association was named the best backpacker accommodation site, while Skycity Darwin picked up the top honour in the luxury category.
Qantas also announced joint winners of its award recognising sustainable tourism efforts in Australia - the Crystal Creek Meadows retreat in Kangaroo Valley and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in Cairns.
Rob Gurney, the airline's commercial executive, said: "Qantas launched this award two years ago as part of an industry-wide approach to sustainable tourism.
"The award was introduced to encourage Australian tourism operators to minimise their impact on the environment and showcase Australia to domestic and international tourists as one of the world's leading sustainable tourism destinations."
Qantas recently launched a new Airbus A330-200 on a route between Sydney and Melbourne and said the aircraft represents a "new era" for its domestic services.
