Abta: Brits should go long-haul for best value
British tourists will find that their money stretches further if they visit a long-haul destination, a travel expert has advised.
Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for Abta - The Travel Association, acknowledged that the economic downturn has led to the pound losing some of its value against foreign currencies.
However, she pointed out that this trend is offset by the fact that day-to-day living costs are lower in many overseas countries than in the UK.
"Quite a lot of long-haul destinations provide us with good value for money," Ms Tuke said.
"In a lot of markets we've seen sterling not performing very well over the last few years, but pretty much every destination is good for us because the quality [and] the price of living is cheaper."
Offering some recommendations for travellers, the Abta spokeswoman said that the Maldives, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Malaysia are all "much cheaper" than the UK for everyday spending.
She also stressed that more established destinations such as the US tend to offer good value for money.
