Singapore attractions to take part in green initiative
The Singapore Tourism Board has announced that several of the city-state's attractions will be switching off their lights for 60 minutes on March 27th as part of the Earth Hour initiative.
Founded in Sydney, Australia in 2007, the Earth Hour project aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage action by urging people all over the world to turn off their lights for a short period.
Some 2.2 million homes and businesses took part in the first year, a number that grew to include some 50 million people across 35 countries in 2008.
Famous landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the CN Tower in Toronto and the Colosseum in Rome have participated in the past and will be joined by Singapore's Merlion Park, Orchard Road, Pit Building and Singapore River attractions this year.
The switch-off will take place at 20:30 local time.
Earth Hour 2009 was the world's largest global climate change initiative, with over 4,000 cities in 88 countries officially turning off their lights.
