Chicago described as one of America's greenest cities

Chicago has been described as one of the most eco-friendly cities in the US.

The comments were made by mayor Richard M Daley, whose governance has led to increased awareness of environmental issues among local people and businesses, according to the Chicago Office of Tourism.

Visitors now have several options to choose from if they want to reduce their carbon footprint, including exploring the city via its 300 miles of cycle routes.

Mr Daley said: "Chicago is not only a world-class destination, but it is also one of the most environmentally-friendly cities in the United States.

"I encourage visitors and residents to participate in Chicago's green attractions and learn how to better protect and preserve our environment."

Hotels including the Four Seasons, InterContinental Chicago and Westin Michigan Avenue have been certified by the Green Seal organisation, while dining establishments such as Nana in Bridgeport and Sprout in Lincoln Park have been praised for serving organic and sustainable food.

Travellers can find out more about eco-friendly breaks in Chicago by visiting the local tourist board's official website.

Flights to Chicago are provided by carriers including Delta, American Airlines and KLM.
