San Francisco Airport showcases eco-friendly terminal
The managers of San Francisco Airport used the recent Earth Day (April 22nd) initiative as an opportunity to showcase the new Terminal 2 building and promote its environmentally friendly aspects.
Currently undergoing a $383 million (£250 million) renovation, the facility is set to be completed by spring 2011.
It is expected to achieve a silver rating on the LEED green building certification scheme, which would make it one of the most modern and eco-friendly airport terminals in the US.
The base marked Earth Day by hosting a tour that highlighted 'green' innovations including energy efficient lighting and machinery, hydration stations allowing visitors to fill up their own water bottles and a food marketplace that will sell locally sourced and organic produce.
San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom said: "Designing and building a more sustainable T2 is an investment in our future.
"Not only do our efforts help the planet, at the same time, these improvements will greatly enhance customers' experience and help to grow the Bay Area's economy."
The refurbished terminal will provide a new home for Virgin America and American Airlines' domestic flights.
