US tourism receipts return to growth
New figures from the US government have revealed that spending by international visitors on travel to and activities within the country increased in February for the first time in 15 months.
The Department of Commerce announced that an estimated $10.4 billion (£6.9 billion) was spent by foreign tourists in the US during the month, marking a year-on-year increase of $180 million, or two per cent.
Some $8.2 billion of visitor expenditure was allocated to travel-related goods and services, such as food, accommodation, recreation and local transport.
The remaining $2.2 billion was spent on flights and other services provided by airlines and vessel operators in the US.
People planning to visit the country this year have the option of taking flights to New York, San Francisco, Washington DC and several other cities.
The Chicago and Illinois Tourist Office recently launched a UK promotion to find a 'Route 66 ambassador' to travel along the famous road and report on the experience in an online blog.
