Watersports fans urged to consider Madeira
People planning to try some watersports during an overseas holiday this year have been encouraged to consider the island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal.
Sue Ockwell, a spokeswoman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators, pointed out that Madeira's sports facilities are an important part of its tourism industry.
"Madeira is a small rocky island in the sea opposite Porto Santo, so watersports are very important, whether it's fishing, waterskiing, sailing, or messing around in boats, there's a lot to do," she commented.
Travellers can also arrange flights to Funchal to try some of the local cuisine, with Ms Ockwell pointing out that visitors are often unaware of the quality of the island's food.
Holidaymakers who choose to visit Madeira this year could benefit from the fact that many local companies and operators are reducing their prices to encourage tourists to return following recent floods.
Jet2 launched a new service to Funchal from Manchester Airport this month and will operate weekly flights to the destination throughout the summer.
