Visitor Trends to Affect Some of Britain's Major Airports
According to reports, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester are becoming popular destinations
New figures suggesting a trend in tourist hotspots within Britain has highlighted a change in activity in its airports. VisitBritain revealed a dramatic increase in overnight stays by foreigners over the past few years, with additional data showing that Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester airports are set to see an influx of passengers.
As foreigners look for trendy and modern alternatives to both London and Edinburgh, the newest figures show that changing trends have caused Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester to rise up the popularity charts. While this provides a welcome boost to the economy, it is also good news for British individuals looking to fly abroad as the lesser-known airports rising in popularity now begin to extend services to both business and economy flights.
Between 2006 and 2009, Manchester saw an influx of nearly 900,000 more visitors than normal, while Birmingham and Glasgow noted an increase of 737,000 and 687,000 respectively. Speaking of the trend changes, VisitBritain's strategy and communications director, Patricia Yates, revealed "This survey confirms an astonishing transformation of our industrial heartlands has taken place. They have become dynamic, stylish international destinations that are increasingly beloved of foreign visitors." Such news will be welcomed by an industry that is increasingly looking for ways to attract customers. With a recent spate of new flights from various airports announced, gains in incoming tourism will certainly mean positive results for those travelling out on business or pleasure, and for the UK travel industry as a whole.
