Antwerp Hosts Traditional Laundry Day
On September 4th Antwerp City Centre will host this years Laundry Day Festival
Those seeking the thrills of summer festivals may like to take the opportunity of jumping on one of the many available flights to Antwerp to revel in the city's traditional, but very less-than-ordinary Laundry Day. Inspired by days gone by when women would flock to the streets to gossip while they hung washing out to dry, today the cultural festival has grown into a vibrant event offering dancing and arts to the 50,000 individuals that participate every year.
Hosted in Antwerp on the 4th September, the Laundry Day festival is essentially a social event, attracting natives and tourists alike onto the streets in a celebration of life, music and laundry. With 13 stages throughout the region, and more than 150 DJ's playing for an hour at a time, there is certainly music for everyone. And with colourful laundry stretched above the street to add to the atmosphere, Belgium's unique festival is certainly an event too delightful to miss.
With Air France flights available from London Heathrow, and KLM routes from Manchester readily available, Antwerp is also a favourable destination for those looking to visit other attractions in the city. Belgium's second largest city, Antwerp is traditionally known for its fame within the diamond industry and currently hosts the Diamond Quarter, an area where armed guards protect dozens of discounted rocks. Elsewhere a multitude of glorious galleries and museums provide a retreat for the culturally minded, while the city's notoriety within the fashion industry that began in the 1980's still remains to this day. Now that the summer holidays have arrived, those looking for an avant-garde festival may wish to consider a visit to the Laundry Day festival and the city beyond.
