Runners Head to Berlin for September Marathon

40,000 runners are expected to take part in this year's Berlin Marathon

With the Berlin marathon just around the corner, Germany's popular and historic city is likely to see large numbers of runners and spectators arriving from around the world. Lining up at the starting point on 26th September, more than 40,000 runners will take their place in the marathon, the route of which takes in numerous Berlin sights such as the Castle Bridge, the Botanical Garden and the Victory Column.

Established in 1974, the event has become known for its vibrant atmosphere, with thousands of spectators spilling onto the streets to cheer on the international athletes as they attempt to complete the 26.2 mile challenge. The weekend of the marathon also features many other events, including a children's race covering a shorter distance and 8,000 inline skaters racing the day before the main event.

Such an event also provides the perfect opportunity for both runners and spectators to take a few days out and enjoy a long weekend in a truly cultural and inspirational city. With numerous museums, historic sights including Berlin Cathedral and the remains of the Berlin Wall there is a multitude of cultural treats to suit everyone's tastes. The city is also known for its vibrant nightlife ranging from nightclubs to the opera offering tourists plenty to enjoy both day and night.

With a range of both economy and business class flights available from destinations including East Midlands Airport and London City, access to Germany's capital city is easy.
