EasyJet sold 5.2 million seats last month

The power of the no-frills, low-cost flight model during times of recession proves itself once again this summer, as EasyJet announces a rise in traveller traffic for August. The budget airline credits the recession and British holiday makers choosing low-cost European getaways over expensive exotic holidays as part of the reason for the rise.

According to the recently-released figures, the budget airline sold 5.2 million seats last month; representing an increase of 8.4 percent for the airline. EasyJet also achieved a 92.3 percent load factor - which also represents an increase of 0.5 percent. Rival budget airlines also showed increases; however, EasyJet outshined its competition in load factor; making EasyJet the winner in eco-friendly terms - with more seats filled per scheduled flight.

As a result of the growth, EasyJet says it believes the idea that people have stopped taking holiday abroad is an unfounded one. According to an EasyJet spokesperson, "The demand for going abroad remains strong. People might be avoiding the expensive holidays that cost thousands of pounds, but a budget European flight is the option people seem to be taking."

Over the past 12 months, EasyJet has seen its total passenger number increase by 7.7 percent, for a total of 48.4 million flyers. This also represents a load factor rise of 1.5 percent.

EasyJet offers budget flights to areas outside the Eurozone as well as popular European holiday and business destinations, including Madrid, Amsterdam, and Zurich. Flights are available from many UK airports, including Bristol, London Gatwick, and Manchester.
