Flights to Mykonos to See Demand Soar Following Island Award
Mykonos has been named Best European Island of the Year
The popular holiday island of Mykonos is likely to see a rise in visitor numbers after winning the top European Island of 2010. While Greece has noted a decline in visitors due to various economical woes, Conde Nast Traveller has awarded the Aegean island of Mykonos with the "Best European Island of the Year" award.
The survey carried out by the luxury travel publication received almost 26,000 votes, and saw individuals ranking destinations according to their "index of satisfaction". With Mykonos winning the top spot, and bounding ahead of other traditionally popular destinations such as Ibiza and Bozcaada, the award not only signals a likely boost in tourism to the island, but an overall increase in Greece's tourism as a whole.
Mykonos remains ever the popular holiday destination, partly because of its role as a central hub for accessing a number of alternative Aegean Sea islands, including Naxos and Paxos. The island has its own international airport, and tourists can easily sail to other islands for further exploration, or remain on Mykonos to admire traditional white washed buildings, enjoy seafood cuisine, and bathe on pristine beaches. The destination is also hugely popular among members of the lesbian and gay community, offering a friendly and exotic Mediterranean location that continues to prove extremely attractive for many Brits.
With voyages to the island available from Athens, those looking to explore Greece in further detail can opt for a twin centre approach. And with the latest award once again putting the nation in a positive public light, flights to the country are likely to see a boost.
